Rep. Henry Hyde, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee,
while lunching at Eli's and holding court on politics, made this
significant observation: "If Bob Dole wins the presidency, he'll be
73 years old when installed. That would make him the oldest
president in our nation's history. And because of his age, the
selection of the vice president would become a hotly contested issue.
The vice president, whoever is chosen, would succeed to the
presidency if Dole became incapacitated. That will be uppermost in
the minds of the party's leaders."
