Disco is the Freddy Krueger of music. No matter how hard people try
to get rid of it, it just won't die - not even after Ethel Merman put
out a dance mix of "There's No Business Like Show Business."
Almost two decades after John Travolta's "Saturday Night Fever"
made disco America's hottest craze and radio's Steve Dahl, then of
hard rock station WLUP-FM (97.9), reacted by trying to annihilate the
thumping sounds of the Bee Gees, Gloria Gaynor and Donna Summer with
the Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park, disco has survived.
What accounts for this phenomenon? It's not just that disco
music has a beat that's easy to dance to. After all, the lambada
craze lasted only slightly longer ...
