NEW YORK A former secretary named Linda has risen to the top of corporate America. Or at least her voice has.

Now Linda's voice, the soft-spoken woman heard in elevators made by Otis Elevator Co., is taking over a once male-dominated industry.

More and more companies are replacing the male voices in their elevators with female voices. And those purchasing new elevators more often request that it have a female voice.

"The trend now is that the female voice is the most popular," said Sharon Mullings, software engineer at Otis Elevator, the world's leading elevator company and a unit of United Technologies Corp. "Anyone updating their systems does it with a female voice."
