Prague is passe. Ho Chi Minh City is in.

That's the word among young American backpackers headed for overseas hot spots.

"Tay ba lo. That's the local Vietnamese name for the increasing number of Western backpackers plodding Ho Chi Minh City streets," writes Wink Dulles, author of the Fielding's Vietnam guide.

"Like an Asian Prague, Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City)) is what Singapore was in the '60s," says Sue Galley, publisher of Lonely Planet books, which is issuing a Ho Chi Minh City guidebook in October. "It's cheap to eat and stay in, with all the excitement of a vigorous Asian market city."
