Like many anarchists in the jazz revolution, Danish guitarist Pierre Dorge has toned down his antics over the years. Soft-spoken and poker-faced in leading his New Jungle Orchestra at Hothouse on Friday, he seemed utterly disconnected from the boisterous, party-going image the band puts forth.

But tomfoolery isn't the only way to skin conservative points of view. While working within the twin systems of swing and bop, Dorge and his wonderful nine-piece band did more to further global awareness with their chattering West African melodies, European textures, free jazz settings and far-flung rhythms than the most outspoken "world music" advocates.
