Article: Ebola Survivors May Hold the Key to a Cure

ATLANTA The Ebola virus can kill hundreds of people with devastating swiftness. Yet some are spared, and understanding how they escape bleeding to death could provide clues to a cure.

Some people survive severe symptoms. Some, exposed to Ebola strains lethal to monkeys, never even get sick.

"Each of these individuals who survive are very valuable," said Dr. Stephen Ostroff of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In Zaire on Saturday, the death toll from the killer virus jumped to 97 from 89 the previous day. The Zairian government lifted the quarantine of the affected region, conceding that the quarantine was a misguided effort to control the outbreak.
