COLLINSVILLE, Ill. The Land of Lincoln is crammed with history.
You can visit the boyhood home of Ernest Hemingway, the town where
Wyatt Earp was born, Frank Lloyd Wright's famous architectural
studio, even the city that Honest Abe roamed for 18 years before he
left to take residence in that big white house in the East.
But you could combine those places and every other historic site
in Illinois, and still it wouldn't match the majesty and wonder of a
downstate ancient city that archeologists peg at more than 10,000
years old: Cahokia Mounds in Collinsville.
