Article: WLS-FM Switches Off `Young Talk' Format

After one year on the air, WLS-FM (94.7) pulled the plug on its "young talk" format Friday, returning to a simulcast with traditional all-talk sister station WLS-AM (890).

Designed as an outlet for discussion of "lifestyles and trends" among listeners between the ages of 25 and 34, "WLS-FM Talks" proved a dismal failure in the ratings. In the latest Arbitrends survey, the Capital Cities; ABC-owned station tied for 32nd place with a 0.6 percent audience share. Just before the switch in June, 1994, WLS-FM ranked 24th with a 1.3 share.

The decision to drop the format coincided with the expiration of the station's talent contracts.
