Article: Strawberry Fields Forever // Berry Picking Offers Taste of Childhood

When luscious-looking red strawberries begin to appear in the markets in late winter, I buy them now and then. Sometimes they're wonderfully sweet and delicious. And sometimes they have very little strawberry flavor.

"Ah, well," I sigh, "before long, it'll be time for home-grown strawberries."

And now, that time is almost here. Flavorful, locally grown ripe strawberries are on their way to markets. Sun-warmed red berries will soon glisten in home gardens. And, at last, the you-pick strawberry farm near my home has posted times and dates on the chalkboard sign telling when the fields will be open to pickers.

I try to be in the strawberry field early on the first day and for a few days ...
