Article: U.S. Must Depoliticize Immigration Policy

From the perspective of most Cuban exiles, last month's U.S. policy shift regarding Cuba represents a betrayal, an insult and a major step backward.

The United States no longer automatically grants political asylum to every Cuban who lands on its shores. Cubans who arrive illegally are now being returned to the island. This reverses a policy in effect since the mid-1960s.

Most Americans are applauding this new action as a long-overdue measure to discourage illegal immigration from Cuba.
