If it seems that lately books have been going to the dogs,
you're right. Elizabeth Marshall Thomas' The Hidden Life of Dogs
started it, and earlier this year Peter Mayle's A Dog's Life and
Willie Morris' My Dog Skip kept the kennel jumping.
Every dog has his say, figured Amy Hempel and Jim Shepard, who
conceived Unleashed: Poems by Writers' Dogs, a decidedly different
as-told-to book. The bowls of writers' pets need to be kept in
kibble and Ken-L-Ration, so why not make the dogs do some of the
work? And so they took pen in paw.
