For Ken Hollis, the open spaces and tall prairie grasses of Cook County's Forest Preserves were a whole new world for him back in 1993.

And the south suburban Robbins resident has been back every summer since.

"I was raised around the 'hood" and didn't know trees had names, said Hollis, 22. "I thought a tree was a tree." The forest preserve district "was a new atmosphere. It was like a new home to me."

Starting Monday; , Hollis will supervise and teach other mostly inner-city teens and young men, ages 16 to 21, who have joined the county's Youth Opportunity Corps.
