It is no accident that the Art Institute of Chicago has the
world's third largest collection of works by French impressionist
Claude Monet - 33 paintings and 11 works on paper.
This town's links to Monet began more than a century ago when
its wealthy entrepreneurs became enamored of impressionism - the art
movement that captured moods and scenes with short brush strokes,
light and pure color.
"This was a city with people who came here, made their fortunes
and didn't have a lot relying on traditions - so they would respond
more readily to the emotional and instinctive nature of impressionism
than those in more traditional circumstances and from old money,"
