Article: Judge May Terminate Court Supervision Of Firefighter Exam

The hiring of Chicago firefighters may no longer need to be court supervised, a judge said Friday.

U.S. District Judge James H. Alesia's announcement came as the city was preparing to give its first exam to firefighter applicants in 10 years next week.

"At a certain point, litigation should end," the judge said.

He put off until Monday, however, a final decision on whether to end or modify a 1974 consent decree governing the test. His decision could open the door for the city to begin using a new exam on Wednesday and Thursday, when 34,000 applicants are scheduled to take the test.
