As the Big Ten prepares to observe its 100th anniversary season, it
faces delicate issues. Financial pressures, gender equity, gambling
concerns and increasing scrutiny of athletes as students are but a
few of the land mines Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany must guide the
conference through as he heads into his seventh year on the job.
Perhaps no issue, though, looms larger than the Bowl Alliance's
potential to undercut the Rose Bowl and change the shape of the bowl
system in the face of increasing calls for a college football
