There's nothing new about claims that eating too little fish makes you more vulnerable to heart disease and inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. But depression?

Yes. Many researchers now suspect that a brain imbalance of fatty acids, mainly of a type found in fish, may also make people more vulnerable to depression. Australian researcher Andrew J. Sinclair, of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, says there is much evidence linking depression to low levels of omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish, as well as high levels of a vegetable fatty acid called omega-6. Most Americans eat seven times more omega-6s, concentrated in corn oil and margarine, than fishy omega-3s.
