NEW GLARUS, Wis. We stood in front of the Bank of New Glarus
drive-up building, which resembles one of those quaint chalets found
in Swiss villages.
What makes this chalet special is its 14-bell glockenspiel. My
wife, Debbie, and our daughters, Kate and Dayne, waited patiently for
the music, expecting to hear some familiar Swiss or Bavarian tune.
The bells began to clang, and we strained to catch the melody.
Kate was the first to recognize it.
"Hey, pa," she said. "Isn't that the Notre Dame fight song?"
Indeed, it appears the Fightin' Irish are a favorite even in
"America's Little Switzerland."
That's the appellation given to this charming Old World village
