While nobody was looking, the sports car virtually disappeared from America.

A sports car is the perfect spring-summer-fall fun vehicle, but most reasonably priced ones have gone to the used car market. Still, a fairly large number in good shape are available, says Norbert Bries, owner of Lake Bluff's Northshore Imports, which sells used sports cars.

Japan's $17,795 Mazda Miata roadster - a copy of England's Lotus Elan sports car - is the only true wind-in-the-face 1995 sports car for those of average means. The few other remaining convertible sports cars - from the Corvette to Ferrari F355 Spider - cost $43,665 and up.
