On the list of things that prevented another Super Bowl, along
with the Washington Redskins and chemistry gone amok, was the Bears'
own offense.
It was never expected to carry the team, but in some critical games
in the post-Super Bowl era, the offense couldn't even carry its end
of the bargain.
Many of the failures were due to the absence of Jim McMahon,
because of what he meant to the offense. But the coaches must also
shoulder a share of the blame.
"With McMahon, you didn't face eight- and nine-man fronts
because he'd pick defenses apart downfield," guard Tom Thayer said.
"We faced that with Doug Flutie, Jim Harbaugh and all the others.
