Article: Beene Bedazzles // Shows Fall Clothes at Field Museum Benefit

The man who freed modern males from the constraints of a stiff collar and a tie came to the Field Museum to preside over a fashion show of his stunning fall designs, organized by Marshall Field's to benefit the museum's Women's Board.

"I made this shirt about 20 years ago," said Louisiana-born Geoffrey Beene, the master tailor who whipped up a collarless shirt and simple unconstructed jacket to wear in his own workrooms. "It was a matter of pure comfort. I never dreamed the shirt would become so popular."

The idea appealed to men in much the same way his modern, comfortable clothes have appealed to women for more than 30 years.
