Article: Lakefront May Get Cable Choice // Council Considers 2nd Franchise

Cable television subscribers along Chicago's lakefront could shop for the best deal from competing cable television companies if the City Council approves Mayor Daley's plan to negotiate a second cable franchise.

Under the mayor's plan, customers in franchise Area One, which stretches along the lakefront from the city's northern border to Kenwood, would be the first in the city to have a choice between cable companies.

The resolution, introduced at Monday's Council meeting, would authorize Cable Administrator Joyce Gallagher to negotiate with 21st Century Cable, a clout-heavy company vying for the right to go head-to-head with Chicago Cable.
