It took at least eight "NYPD Blue" episodes for actor Jimmy Smits to
feel comfortable in the starring role of police detective Bobby
Simone.
"I had to jump on this train without a firm grip on Simone's
emotional baggage," said Smits.
The former "L.A. Law" Emmy winner joined the "NYPD" cast last
season, after David Caruso quit the show. The "Blue" crew -
co-stars, writers, producers - welcomed the level-headed Smits after
putting up with the temperamental, tantrum-throwing Caruso. Ratings
rose after the first Simone episode aired last November.
But the new guy on the set was pushing himself hard during long
work weeks last fall and winter. He developed a nervous rash. "I
