In the face of powerful opposition, Circuit Court Clerk Aurelia
M. Pucinski is making a strong bid to win the endorsement of the Cook
County Democratic Central Committee.
Ald. Thomas Murphy (18th) is set to challenge Pucinski with the
tacit support of Mayor Daley and Cook County Board President John H.
Stoger.
Cook County Republican chairman Manny Hoffman is hopeful that
even the GOP could benefit from a Murphy-Pucinski battle.
But, at least for now, Pucinski has outflanked her opposition.
Neither Daley nor Stroger is actively promoting Murphy. Pucinski is
taking advantage of their inactivity. She's locking in the support
of ward and township committeemen.
