WASHINGTON Cracking down on food stamp fraud, the Agriculture
Department knocked 131 stores in Chicago off the list of businesses
where poor shoppers may use the coupons.
Only Dallas had more stores dropped from the program.
Liquor stores, gas stations and video rental stores with little
or no food for sale were among the 752 stores in seven cities
nationwide that were eliminated from the food stamp program in what
the department called Operation Checkout.
"Eliminating these stores is part of our aggressive efforts to
fight food stamp fraud and abuse, including trafficking where food
stamps are bought or sold illegally or exchanged for cash or drugs,"
