MANILA, Philippines The most powerful typhoon in a decade ripped through the Philippines Friday, killing at least 65 people, destroying thousands of houses and cutting electricity to a third of the country.

After whipping up 140 m.p.h. winds along the eastern coast of the Philippines' largest island, Luzon, Typhoon Angela weakened only slightly before hitting the capital, Manila.

Officials reported at least 50 people missing. More than 200,000 others were forced from their homes, thousands of which were destroyed or submerged in floodwaters.
