Leon Carter scored a career-high 21 points to lead host San Diego State to an 83-63 victory over Northwestern on Friday in the season opener for both teams.

Carter, a 6-foot-10 senior center, was perfect from the field, making all nine of his field-goal attempts.

Although the Aztecs made just one more field goal than the Wildcats, they held a huge advantage at the free-throw line. San Diego State made 24 of its 28 foul shots, while Northwestern was just 5-of-10.

Northwestern made only 11 of its 33 field-goal attempts in the second half.
