When I heard the first blurbs of information Sunday morning about the shooting of Ethan Kane, my initial reaction was that the young man had probably made the literally fatal mistake of fighting back when confronted by armed carjackers near his Lincoln Park home.

At that time I knew just the basics. You know them too by now. A 21-year-old man and his buddy sitting in their minivan at about 4:25 in the morning, talking about getting some hamburgers at some all-night joint. Gunmen approach, struggle ensues, the 21-year-old loses his life - and the bastards who did it take off.

The poor guy should have just turned over the keys, I thought. How many times have we seen stories about victims ...
