Article: Religious Revival // Catholics Return to Latin Mass

Thirty years after the end of Vatican II, a vestige of the old Roman Catholic Church is making a comeback: the mass in Latin.

Supporters say it quenches a thirst for the mystery and majesty of Catholicism that is missing in modern, English services.

"I think the rising popularity is tied to the general search for the sacred in our lives," said Mary Kraychy, executive director of the Glenview-based Coalition in Support of Ecclesia Dei, which helps Catholics attend or start Latin masses.

The Second Vatican Council, considered the central event of 20th century Catholicism, ended on Dec. 8, 1965.
