Newlyweds often are cautioned by their elders to expect the "seven-year itch. . . . " that precarious time that issues a warning that the honeymoon is over and reality is settling in.

I always have questioned the number of years involved in this prognostication.

More realistically, it is the "11-year itch" that tries the strength of those ties that bind.

I have observed that about 11 years after the wedding bells have rung, the major appliances start to break down, the table and bed linens develop rips and tears. The carpeting wears thin and the furniture needs refinishing or reupholstering.

The "11-year itch" tugs at the heart strings and the purse strings.
