Article: 3 GIs Guilty in Rape of Okinawa Girl

NAHA, Okinawa Three U.S. servicemen were convicted Thursday in the rape of a 12-year-old Okinawan girl and sentenced to 6 1/2 to 7 years in prison in a case that became a symbol of American bases on Japanese territory.

The verdict, issued by a panel of three judges at the Naha District Court, followed six months of protests against the U.S. presence on Okinawa.

Navy Seaman Marcus Gill of Woodville, Texas, and Marine Pfc. Rodrico Harp of Griffin, Ga., were sentenced to seven years each. Marine Pfc. Kendrick Ledet of Waycross, Ga. received a 6 1/2-year term. years.

The sentences, tough by Japanese standards, will be served in Yokosuka prison, south of Tokyo. Rape causing injury ...
