The European slave trade in Africa troubled Comboni in the mid-19th century and he made it his life's work to evangelize the African people. The idea was not to take charge of the African people, but to train them to be their own leaders.

This weekend, 100,000 people will be in Rome for his beatification ceremonies, one step below sainthood.

From west suburban La Grange Park, a contingent of about 30 Roman Catholics will participate in the Sunday celebration. They are people connected with a Comboni Missionaries center that trains lay people to work in Africa.
