It's often said that Sunday's church hour is the most racially
segregated 60 minutes in America. But in recent months there seems
to be another spirit at work in America's mainstream churches: racial
reconciliation. It seems appropriate to showcase that spirit in the
days after Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday.
While racial polarization was the dominant theme of 1995 and
seemingly the foreseeable future, 1996 just might turn out to be a
year of racial reconciliation. Such an abrupt shift in mood isn't
quite as surprising as it first seems. After witnessing the racially
