Five years ago Holy Cross Hospital on Chicago's Southwest Side
was bleeding red ink and its survival seemed at risk.
Today the Marquette Park area landmark is back in black ink, has
recruited 50 new doctors, opened 18 outpatient clinics, doubled the
number of births in its newly renovated maternity; pediatrics wing.
Among hospitals its size (400 beds), Holy Cross has also been
ranked No. 1 in Illinois and No. 7 in the United States by the widely
used Press-Ganey Patient Satisfaction Measurement System.
It's been an amazing, and mostly unnoticed, resurrection for a
venerable community institution founded by a Catholic order of nuns,
the Sisters of St. Casimir, on a borrowed $250,000 in ...
