When Northeastern Illinois University professor Chris Ledvina hooked up the school's new earthquake detector this month, he prepared himself for some sleepless nights.

The instrument will ring Ledvina, day or night, whenever it detects seismic waves from major earthquakes around the globe.

"For science, we can endure anything," he said.

Ledvina, who teaches earth sciences, said Northeastern's Northwest Side campus has the Chicago area's only seismograph. The device is sensitive enough to detect Lake Michigan storm waves pounding the beach three miles to the east or shock waves from an underground atomic explosion.

Unfortunately, the seismograph missed the nuclear test France ...
