Few science fiction novels dealing with interstellar adventure
would make much sense without the "jumps" through "hyperspace" that
enable spaceships to treat the vastness of the cosmos as though it
were little more than a city subway system.
But until recently, physicists have tended to dismiss such
journeys as fantasy.
