Pinot Noir's growing popularity is getting another boost this summer from wine lovers looking for a "lighter" alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

"Lighter" may be misleading, though, because Pinot Noir wines come in all sorts of flavors and densities. The relatively inexpensive ($8 or so) Napa Ridge Pinot Noir provides a very dense, mouth-filling, chewy wine that few would categorize as "light."

In buying Pinot Noirs for warm-weather enjoyment, you may need advice from your wine dealer or others who have sampled the Pinot Noir to tell you what you're getting.
