At least 23 Americans were killed and more than 300 were injured
at
a U.S. Air Force base in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday when a fuel truck
exploded just outside the compound fence.
The blast occurred near King Abdul Aziz Air Base in Khobar,
near Dhahran on Saudi Arabia's east coast. U.S. planes patrol the
skies over Iraq from that base.
The explosion toppled an apartment tower where U.S. troops live
with French, British and Saudi personnel.
It blasted a crater 35 feet deep and 85 feet across. It
severely damaged several other buildings.
No one claimed responsibility for the blast, but U.S. officials
assumed it was a terrorist attack.
