For residents in an urban area, the reality of the outdoors is that it is out there.

Somewhere.

It is difficult to foster a respect and understanding of nature from a distance.

So shorten the distance.

Most of us only get in a hunting trip or two, a handful of fishing expeditions and maybe a family camping trip or a few Sunday hikes in a state park or a forest preserve. Work and home life prohibit much more.

Pieces of the outdoors can be brought into the city or the subdivision. If nothing else, they can spark the memory of previous excursions.
