Only one-hundredth of one percent of presettlement prairie
remains intact in the Prairie State, according to the Nature
Conservancy.
The irony is not lost on Illinois homeowners who have begun to
introduce a variety of native grasses and wildflowers into their home
gardens.
While some gardeners are satisfied to use native species as
ornamental accents, venturesome gardeners are planting complete
naturalized, native landscapes that - once established - are
virtually maintenance-free.
"Once these native species are well and deeply rooted, they
will spread on their own without any encouragement from the
