At midterm, her future is uncertain.
But Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun (D-Ill.) knows what she wants.
Moseley-Braun, 48, the first African-American woman elected to the
U.S. Senate, is positioning herself to win another term in 1998.
Several recent polls indicate she is vulnerable. A $563,000
debt from her 1992 campaign is making her re-election bid more
difficult.
Though she is facing a tough race, it's premature to count her
out. After a shaky start, she is hitting her stride in the Senate
and is having considerable political impact.
For starters, she played an important role in Rep. Richard J.
Durbin's nomination for Paul Simon's Senate seat in last month's
Democratic primary. ...
