But Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun (D-Ill.) knows what she wants. Moseley-Braun, 48, the first African-American woman elected to the U.S. Senate, is positioning herself to win another term in 1998.

Several recent polls indicate she is vulnerable. A $563,000 debt from her 1992 campaign is making her re-election bid more difficult. Though she is facing a tough race, it's premature to count her out. After a shaky start, she is hitting her stride in the Senate and is having considerable political impact.
