Despite the best intentions, the $326 million state-of-the-art, computerized, hands-off baggage system at Denver International Airport turned into an unmitigated disaster.

United Airlines adopted an innovative baggage system by BAE Automated Systems Inc., airline officials said. Upon check-in, luggage was to be tagged with bar code labels identifying passenger and plane. Bags were to zoom through an elaborate system of 17-m.p.h. minirail cars and label-readers to reach the correct departure gate or baggage claim device.
