Dear Dr. Fox:
Our dog, Baxter, has been a devoted and loving friend. In fact, we
think of him as one of our family members. So, understandably, we're
nervous about how he's going to react to a change in the family --
namely, our firstborn, who should arrive in six months.
We've heard that a dog can become very jealous of babies and even
hurt them, so we're concerned. Do you have any advice for us?
R.T., St. Louis
Dogs don't become jealous -- they're "made" jealous by unthinking,
insensitive owners who suddenly disregard and neglect them when a
baby arrives. Obviously, you and your husband are not such owners,
since you are trying to prepare ahead for your big day and Baxter's
reaction to it.
