Article: City urged to give away blue bags for recycling

A recycling group suggested that the city give away blue bags after the group released a survey Monday showing four of five households aren't recycling.

Participation rates in blue bag recycling were as high as 43 percent in Edgewater, but less than 6 percent in West Town and South Deering.

"Not enough Chicagoans are recycling," said Margie Isaacson of the Chicago Recycling Coalition. "The lack of participation by low-income residents is especially worrisome and may show a reluctance to buy blue bags."

Volunteers counted blue bags in garbage carts from 477 households in 10 neighborhoods. Assuming a typical household recycles one bag per week, the overall participation rate was 20 ...
