I was talking on the phone with an old college buddy the other
day and, inevitably, conversation turned to the movie "Independence
Day." It is unfortunate, I said, that the film is causing yet
another surge in the strange folk religion of UFOs.
"You know," he interjected, in a small voice, "I might just
believe in UFOs." I wanted to reach into the phone, grab my friend
by the collar, slap him good and hard, and scream, "UFOs?!? What,
are you nuts?"
Apparently yes, he and a lot of other people. Last week's
Newsweek, in a typical gee-whiz article nuzzling and licking the
subject, cites a poll claiming that 48 percent of Americans think
UFOs are real, the same percentage that thinks the ...
