CINCINNATI The Cubs front office handed manager Jim Riggleman a two-year contract extension Tuesday that should keep him in the Cubs dugout longer than any manager since Leo Durocher.

Riggleman, who already was signed through 1997, was extended through 1998 with a club option for 1999. That would be his fifth year at the helm. "Jim has done a great job with this club," general manager Ed Lynch said. After the announcement was made, the Cubs were beaten for the ninth time in 10 days, 6-3 by the Reds.
