The world knows Edgar Degas as an Impressionist painter who captured
the pulse of life in 19th century Paris. But Degas was only about 50
when the Impressionists put on their final exhibition in 1886, ending
an era. Much of his work was still to come.
It is Degas' later work that is featured in "Edgar Degas: Beyond
Impressionism," a major show that opens Monday at the Art Institute
of Chicago, 111 S. Michigan. The exhibition consists of more than 90
pastels, paintings and sculptures Degas did in the period between the
show that marked the official end of the Impressionist movement and
his death in 1917.
