Playing catch-up: The most heartwarming story, as we return from
a vacation that Essee and I spent largely in Northwestern Memorial
Hospital, was the awarding of Medals of Freedom by President Clinton
to prominent Chicagoans Joseph Cardinal Bernardin and Ebony publisher
John Johnson. Two more deserving recipients in bettering the human
condition would be hard to find.
