Four southwest suburbs have voted in the last few weeks to make English their official language, an action that critics say discriminates against Spanish-speaking immigrants and discourages them from moving to town.

Crestwood Mayor Chester Stranczek has led the English-first campaign in his village and neighboring suburbs.

Chicago Ridge, Worth and Evergreen Park have followed his lead, passing resolutions that not only make English their official tongue but also urge Congress to do the same for the nation.
