Article: Homemade ice cream: A Labor of love

Ice cream is America's favorite dessert, so it's fitting to give the homemade version a try on Labor Day. On average, we consume about six gallons of ice cream a year. (And some of us enthusiastically take up the slack for those who don't quite eat their quota.)

Ice cream is a treat both children and adults enjoy. Homemade ice cream seems even more special and has been elevated to the "gourmet" cookery category. Thanks to the popularity of small-capacity (usually one-quart) electric ice cream makers - a lot more practical for small families than the old one-gallon, hand-cranked models - homemade ice cream is coming into its own again.
