Bonaire's underwater treasures are considerable, and perhaps
paramount. But this island holds its own considerable charms on
land. Remember: Though nearly half the visitors are divers, an
actual majority never strap on a tank.
Most charming for me is that Bonaire is still relatively unknown.
While a record of 59,410 visitors flocked to Bonaire in 1995 - far
more than twice the number of a decade before - this is a sleepy
spot, something becoming scarce in the Caribbean. By comparison,
sister island Aruba draws more than 60,000 tourists a month.
Despite a boom in population and building in the last decade, fewer
than 14,000 people live here full-time, which makes for a cozy feel.
